Question by upyr1: would hutting down the US mint effect inflation?
I know that most money is data in a computer- however if we were to shut down the US mint for a period of lets say 5 years would that affect the value of our currency or simply increase the amount people depend on their debit card ?

you are correct in understanding that increasing the money supply doesn't require actual currency to be printed. Fractional reserve banking allows the lending, earning, saving and lending again cycle to create money in the manner you described, as data in a computer.

What is interesting about paper currency is its relatively short life. So as bills become tattered, if we know the mint is shut down, we might indeed instinctively use less cash and more debit cards out of concern that we might be holding the note when it is deemed unworthy of exchange.
