Gold Sovereign
For several hundred years this has been the traditionally highly valued British Coin.
Even today the Gurkhas insist in Nepal on being paid in Gold Sovereigns.
In WWII British airmen parachuted into occupied Europe and wore belts containing Gold Sovereigns.
The very first Gold Soverign was struck in 1489 for King Henry VII.
The value of the Sovereign at that time was one pound sterling.
It featured King Henry VII seated and the reverse was a shield on the Double Tudor Rose.
It was from this King that the name Sovereign came about .
There were a number of variations on this coin and Sovereigns continued to be made during the reigns of King Henry VII and all other monarchs until The
First Coinage of King James Ist..
Early Sovereigns fetch fairly high prices and can go as high as $10000.
There are now higher value Proof Gold Coins available with a face value of £5(these are usually proof coins witha high value)
