Proof Sets are specially minted and examined for defects under very strict supervision.
Nowadays Proof Gold Coins are usually Slabbed (sealed in a protective plastic transparent box) but that in itself is not a symbol of authenticity.
Proof Coins are nowadays always accompanied by a certificate of authenticity by the issuing mint and this should always be kept safely and supplied with the coins if you ever resell them.
