World Coins
Mexican Gold Coins
Article by Chris Warner
Every country in the world has its own monetary system, and they each have their own coins. Adding coins from all over the world to your coin collection will add diversity and interest to the collection. Imagine coins from North America, Africa, Japan, New Zealand and Russia. The possibilities are endless.
Take a look at Africa. Each country in Africa is home to its own culture, and the coins from those countries offer a small part of those cultures. The countries of Africa use dinars, shillings, francs. Like many other countries, coins that are from earlier times that are no longer used are more valuable. An example would be the South African pound (they use the rand now). The South African coins were available in 1, 3 and 6 pence, 1, 2, 2.5 and 5 shillings and ½ and 1 pound. All were originally made from silver, but beginning in 1932, some were made in gold. The Gold Krugerrand of South Africa is a highly collectible coin, and was first minted in 1967 to help the South African gold market.
Japan and China have also contributed much to the world of coin collecting. The coins of both countries are different from most coins and are very beautiful. Chinese coins were made by casting rather than being cut by dies like most coins. This makes them very unique. The majority of Chinese coins were circular with a square hole in the middle and decorated with Chinese letters and pictures. The Japanese made similar coins a long time ago, and made them from iron, copper, silver and gold depending on how much the coin was worth. The Japanese put the hole in the center so the coins could be carried easily on a string.
While not as old as other coins in the world, Australian coins were first minted in 1910. Oceanic coins were also considered legal tender in Australia for a long time, and they had an exchange value that worked with the prevailing monetary system. Australia also recognized the Spanish dollar, the English shilling, the Pagoda and the Rupee until 1825, when British currency became the legal monetary system of Australia.
Coins from Greece, New Zealand, Central America and North America are all different and unique. Each country has their own monetary systems that represent different cultures. Canadian coins like the Maple Leaf Gold coin are terrific additions to any world coin collection. Canadian coins all represent some small part of Canada on them. Mexican coins are also very unique since they have portraits of Mexico's leaders and culture changes from its history.
Adding coins from all over the world to your collection is a great way to learn something new about a different culture. Coins depict leaders, art and history of their countries, which makes each one valuable for many reasons besides the obvious.

If what you have is the same as the ebay listed (url below), the bid has ended at the price of USD460.

Subject: 20 peso oro puro (pure gold)
Question
I inherited a 15 gram 20 peso oro puro (it says it on the coin itself)piece. It is stamped 1918 and has a picture of the aztec calendar on one side and the symbol from the mexican flag (eagle w/serpant in it's mouth). I'd like to know what it is worth? If i chose to sell it how would i go about it? It's history, if any. Thank you!
Answer
Hi Patricia, this Mexican 20 Pesos coin should weigh 16.6666 grams and would contain .4823 of an ounce of gold. There were 2.831 million minted in Mexico City (Mo) that year and it may be worth slightly more than its gold value depending on amount of wear and collector demand.
You may find similar pieces on Ebay.com for comparison and try selling it there or at a pawn or coin shop.
You might also try a library for a copy of the Standard Catalog of World Coins for pictures, values and lots more interesting info.

Mexican Wedding Traditions
Mexican Gold Coins
Article by Rafi Michael
Babylon Weddings has provided information on various weddings in culture, styles, just in case you are going to a different wedding and want to know what is done at a particluar cultured wedding. below is a Mexican wedding:
In Mexico, a traditional couple getting married are sponsored, financially, by their Godparents, to act as padrinos, sponsors of the wedding.
They are mentors to the bride and groom throughout their engagement, and even after they are married. Needless to say, the bride and groom honor them with a place in the wedding program. The padrinos may present the couple with a rosary and a Bible during their wedding ceremony.
Mexican Wedding Ceremony Traditions
During the marriage vows, a white ribbon or rosary, called a "lasso", is symbolically wrapped around the necks of the couple, which represents their joining.
It is customary for a Mexican groom to give his wife a wedding present of thirteen gold coins, which are then blessed by the priest during the marriage ceremony. This gesture represents the groom's commitment to support his new wife.
As the newlyweds leave the church, red beads may be tossed at them, to bring good luck. At the wedding reception, all the guests will join hands and form a heart shape around the newly married couple as they have their first dance.
Wedding Receptions in Mexico
At a traditional Mexican reception, it is customary for the guests to form a heart around the newlyweds, as they begin their first dance as husband and wife.
A paper mache container known as a pinata is suspended from the ceiling at Mexican wedding receptions. It will be shaped like a heart or an animal. Filled with candy, it is hung by a string and swatted at by children. When it breaks, the candy falls out and is shared among the guests.
The Mexican wedding cake is, usually, a fruit cake that has been soaked in rum.
