While everyone seem to be in the middle of a Gold Rush Silver has been steadily growing in worth .
Although Silver is still growing in value it will probably never reach the dizzy heights of gold.
One investor tried to corner the market in silver but was eventually thwarted.

Where to buy Coins

What is the best place to buy Coins ?

Many people just look on Coin collecting as a hobby.

There are however lots of newspaper and magazine articles about folks who have found a rare or valuable coin and subsequently sold it for thousands !

This is a great encouragement for anyone who collects coins.
It is rather like winning the Lotto but without the likelihood of losing the initial investment.

(I speak as someone who played the daily lotto for six consecutive days only to see his numbers appear (in order) on the seventh day !)

The difference is that coin collecting involves skill and judgment too.

What your aim is – To find a rare coin or coins that someone has either mis-catalogued, under graded or otherwise undervalued.

You will be pitting your knowledge against people in the following fields :

Coin Dealers in Retail Stores:
(I exclude companies selling coins on TV since they usually sell to people easily influenced by advertising and hype)

Retail Store Owners usually know a LOT about coins and may have been in business for a number of years.
They will have excellent knowledge about the retail prices of popular coins like Silver Dollars, Proof Coins, Gold Coins and similar easily saleable coins.
It is unlikely that you will find great bargains in these stores.
The exception is for SPECIALIST COINS –coins from unusual countries and very early coins may offer hope for the bargain shopper.

Many dealers specialise in a specific range of coins apart from what I term their bread and butter coins.(easy to sell popular coins on which they make a smaller profit)

Dealers with specialist knowledge are very much worth cultivating not only for their knowledge of their field but to find out what THEY in turn are looking for.

By talking with them and looking at their coins you will learn a great deal. You may then be able to find some of the coins that dealer A is looking fo at dealer B who you will visit next

This is particularly common in dealers in small antiques arcades and people who go from dealer to dealer buying and selling coins that they know they will be able to resell quickly are known as RUNNERS (the other definition of a runner is someone who grabs a handful of coins and runs off without paying !(This varies from Country to Country)

Dealers and collectors in Flea markets (my favourite hunting ground)
Flea Markets:
You might think that a Flea Market is an unusual place to find a rare coin ..
But you would be wrong. I have found many rare coins from the most unlikely people at flea Markets.

You will see MANY over –priced coins (especially silver dollars and silver crowns) as these vendors are usually amateurs who do not realise the price difference to be found in grading.
It is always very worthwhile to go through cabinets or books of coins from dealers at Flea Markets.

Pay particular attention to coins from foreign countries (research is essential)
Many dealers who show coins will also sell stamps or Medals (examine he medals closely as these can be worth much more than coins.
If there is an antiques dealer who also sells coins or medals then he/she should have some bargains among their stock.

All flea market sellers eventually have a cash crisis of some kind – and if they are doing really badly may give you a chance to buy coins at a substantial discount.

They will almost certainly give hefty discounts for bulk buys or buying other objects plus the coins you really want.Ask how business is – and remember EVERYTHING IS NEGOTIABLE.

How about a local Coin Show ?
Sometimes coin shows have displays from local or nearby dealers and then you can compare prices from several different dealers on the same day.

It’s a great place to see new coins and what is currently available (maybe at a discount
A coin show is also a superb place to sell your bargain coins - all dealers have to have new stocks every week to keep their regular customers happy and interested.
You may even have the chance to collect some unexpected rare coins as well.

The Internet and Mail Order.:

Coin dealers love he Internet- there are thousands of dealers on the net.
There is really no reason why you should restrict your buying and selling to just your own country
The huge advantage as far as you are concerned is that you can see the coin before you buy on an online catalogue website and pay for it by PAYPAL.

There are of course exceptions – for some reason there are are fraudsters in a group of countries – Nigeria, Malaysia and The Philippines are notorious for online scams. Either you get a different or poorer grade of coin or in extreme circumstances just a registered empty envelope.

I would personally avoid either buying or selling in those countries currently.
Always read the dealers terms and conditions carefully – some dealers NEVER give refunds. Make very sure you can get a refund if you are not satisfied with the coin.

Before buying online try to contact existing customers for feedback (see the auction section for details.
There are MANY fake coin websites…it may well be safer to use a local version or branch of eBay.
NEVER part with any passwords or pin numbers to online websites.

I’m Shy about using an Auction !

Everyone feels like that at first. Its normal.
With online auctions there are normally two choices –
A BUY IT NOW option (which is the same as going ino a shop and buying at the marked price.

The Auction Option – this is much more fun.
Really rare coins often turn up at auctions.

There is a theory that an auction that starts off with a low starting price generates lots of bids.
Well that is sometimes true – but sometimes it lets crafty folk like you and I get coins at bargain prices.

Do Not ever make the first bid on a coin you want –Why ? Because if there are other bids you will have already made the price higher !

Wait until the last minute before the auction ends and if the coin looks great value, type in your bid (the top amount you think you can get the coin for and make a profit on it when you resell it)

Many people sell their whole collections at auction and this really does give you the chance to grab some bargains.

Here are regrettably fraudsters on every auction site and you have to investigate the sellers FEEDBACK before making a bid.

Click on the feebdback button and you will see what other buyers experiences are with that seller –
Avoid sellers who over grade their coins or take weeks to deliver them
Some buyer however are never satisfied and what you are looking for is sellers with feedback of 98% or higher.
Check out the other people who have bought as well to see what they have bought.
It can be a fun and interesting game.

Avoid sellers with less than 10 feedbacks (hese are often gained by buying ebooks and other low value items which build up the seller feedback (you want feedback from people on coins – not other goodies !

Friends and other Coin Collectors:

Other coin collectors often have duplicate coins that they will sell for price less than market value. (A Coin dealer always buys at less than market value and sells at market value – that is how he/she makes a profit)

To find friends who will sell to you look on online groups, forums and (if you have one) local groups. Then you can all learn from each other and swap information and possibly coins.

You can learn a great deal from forums and on-line groups (Yahoo and Google have many coin groups and so do Facebook and Myspace)From them you might find dealers who will give discounts, tips on coin collecting and maybe even acquire some of their coins too !

No matter what anyone will tell you, you will never ALWAYS make a profit on coins – sometimes you will win and sometimes you may lose.
The way to win is to be knowledgeable and well informed.

You will eventually meet dealers who will help you – and some who will try to fleece you. You will learn by experience – and experience has no price.

While the world seem to be mad for gold Silver has been steadily growing in value .
Although Silver is still growing in value it will probably continue growing in value.
One investor tried to corner the market in silver but was eventually foiled .

Gold And Silver Proof Coin Terms explained.

For a newcomer to coin collecting some of the commonly used terms can be confusing. Here are some of the commonly used descriptions and their explanations.

Proof Coin
This is not just a condition but a specially struck coin.

A Proof Coin may well be struck several times and will by doing this have a sharpness and bite to all features on the coin which an uncirculated coin will not even approach in quality.

Proof coins are never knowingly circulated (and immediately lose value if they are circulated).

Proof coins are usually SLABBED nowadays (encased in a protective plastic container to retain their condition and protect against knocks or scratches.

Knocks or scratches severely lessen the value of a Proof coin.

Even minor handling of a Proof Coin will damage the surface unless you use cotton gloves (this is due to the acids on your skin and will only be visible under a magnifying glass – yet another reason to buy slabbed coins).

You will ONLY find Proof coins in coins from the 19th century up to present day .

Earlier coins of high quality will be Uncirculated rather than Proof coins.
The proof coin has a mirror-like appearance .
Because different mints have different minting processes, the final appearance may differ from mint to mint.
The commonest Proof coins will have had acid applied to the dies and the backdround of the die will be polished.
This results in the shiny mirror-like appearance of the background.
The other parts of the coin will have a frosted look.

There are also reverse proofs which have a frosted field empty space) but with the
raised parts of the coin having a mirror finish. Both sides of the coin will have similar finishes.

Identification of a Proof coin is fairly easy - they usually have a letter and a mintmark
next to the year and these will be embedded into the coin.In the USA this is usually P or D for Philadelphia or Denver.

The main thing to look for though is the finish of the coin.

If you are buying a GRADED PROOF COIN then this should be between PR60 and PR70
If the coin is graded lower than PR60 this usually means it was handled badly during manufacture.

The cheapest way to buy Proof coins is directly from the relevant Mint or as secondhand items on auction sites like eBay.

Most coin dealers hold stocks of Proof coins as these are one of the most requested coins and are easy to recognise and buy or sell.
Proof coins are often sold as complete proof sets of the new currency of a country and these are usually a great buy.

Like most things in life rarity affects value and short runs of proof coins will increase their value
Proof Coins are a much higher grade than regular coins in circulation (even so-called uncirculated (BU) coins.
This is because they are specially minted and checked by hand for the perfect coin.
They are usually the first coins to be minted in a series. This is so that the dies are still crisp and sharp.
Each coin is pressed (usually by hand) several times so that the die exactly presses in the same position on the coin.
This gives it a MUCH crisper sharper definition (edge sharpness) over all the coin.
I have seen many uncirculated coins cased pretending to be proof coins. There is HUGE diffference in value.
If you are inspecting proof coins with a view to purchase you should always take along a linen tester (a folding sharp magnifier)
what you are looking for is the tell-tall scratches and dings that coins give each other in a bag of coins - it may be uncirculated but it is NOT a Proof coin if it has scratches dings and other marks. Also check for crispness of head and obverse detail.

Proof coins SHOULD come with a COA (Certificate of authenticity - issued by the mint NOT by the dealer !) and should really nowadays be cased as well.
When compared to an uncirculated coin, Proof coins have a very highly polished finish and really stand out.

The other thing to look for is the feedback score - look for the RED entries and go through their whole feedback listings and check the each of the sales on those and look at the comments - if they regularly are mistaken about coin condition then they are either very inexperienced or scamming by over valuing the coin.
A Common trick is to say that a coin is a proof coin when it is just uncirculated.

While the world seem to be in the middle of a Gold Rush Silver has been steadily growing in value .
Although Silver is still growing in value it will probably never reach the dizzy heights of gold.
One investor tried to corner the market in silver but was eventually foiled .

Feedback on coins is very easy to confuse.
Feedback is the main thing that you as a buyer have to check the bona fides of the vendor.

The main problem is that it is relatively easy to get good feedback for a vendor.
All that he or she has to do is buy a number of low value items for 99 cent or so.
This way anyone can get reasonable feedback for just a couple of hundred dollars.

When you are thinking of buying gold coins however you want to be REALLY sure that the vendor is genuine.

It is fairly easy to check the vendors feed back - just click on the feedback line in their auction.
What you want to look for is that the vendor has previously sold coins and that the purchaser was happy with the purchase.

Scammers will ONLY have feedback for themselves as buyers not as sellers.
This may well be under 4 or 6 different ebay identities (its fairly easy to have a few ebay identities).

Check the other listing of goods they have sold too - these may well be in various categories.

There is no reason of course not to buy from a private buyer with just a couple of coins to sell and these may well be the best buy of your life !
Private vendors should be emailed and asked about the condition of the coin and if it has been to a reputable grading service.
Many grading services are really just back room jobs and not worth the plastic they are slabbed in .

Gold coins are a favourite item for scammers so please look at the vendors website as this may reassure you.

Slabbing a coin does NOT make it into a Proof Coin.

Coin Collecting Guides

These are really useful guides when buying Gold Coins.
There are some real eye-openers in here !

Buyers beware of misleading sellers

Just a note to all buyers of all coins, especially raw 1/4, and 1/2 eagle, indian gold.....
This is especially true now, because the gold coin market is so hot on Ebay.
Numerous times do I see sellers of raw coins, making claims in their description
of the coin, that, in their opinion the coin is in a mint state,
(MS) condition, when in actuality, the coin they are selling shows signs of....
more from this Guide....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Investing in Gold coins Double Eagles only way to go

However, not all hard asset investment areas have suffered
the same fate during this period. There is at least one gold investment
sector that has defied the flat gold market.
That sector is rare American gold coins.
We're not referring to common date Double Eagles and similar generic coins.

more from this Guide......

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the Slabs Lie, DONT BUY !!!

Slabbing a coin does not make it worth thousands of dollars
as lots of sellers would like you to believe.
ONLY CERTIFICATION makes a coin worth a premium
over non-certified raw coins!!!
Here's the kicker.... there are only 3 certification companies IN THE WORLD
that are respected enough to accurately certify a coin!
More from this Guide .......

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ten Essential Rare Coin Grading Tips
This is truly an ESSENTIAL Guide on Coin Grading

1. Hold and view the coin correctly. This is a common mistake,
one made even by seasoned numismatists.
Always hold the coin by its edges, between your index finger and thumb.
I use the middle finger on my right hand as a safety net should the coin
slip out of my grip. Next, and equally important, is to rock the coin
back and forth while at the same time turning it in a circular motion
that gives the coin a full 45-degree angle.

more from this Guide .......

While everyone seem to be in the middle of a Gold Rush Silver has been steadily growing in worth .
Although Silver is still growing in value it will probably continue growing in value.
One investor tried to corner the market in silver but was eventually thwarted.

Coin Grading Service IS it necessary ?
Because of the huge number of coin collectors nowadays, I suggest that for important coins (especially Gold Coins)you should
use a Coin Grading Service.

What is a Coin Grading Service?
This is a professional company that accurately describes and judges the actual condition of the coin submitted to them.

Before Coin Grading Services, coin buying and selling was pretty much a wild west style of business
where you were pitting your knowledge and experience against that of the dealer.
Coins graded by a professional service are normally slabbed in plastic and a description of the coin is included inside the slab.
Some services also value coins.

In the early days the dealer would mark a coin as being (say) VF but with wear on the obverse a coin grading service would grade the coins as GF.
This is not really necessary when buying or selling Bullion Gold Coins
but there are HUGE differences between various grades of collectibe rare gold coins.

So a universally accepted standard arose and this is strongly adhered to by Major Coin Grading Services.
If you do not use a major grading service then you will not know how accurately your coins are graded.

Some dealers tend to over-grade the coins they sell. You should be aware of this and this often shows up in feedback on eBay.
A professional grading service usually encases the coin in a plastic slab and affixes a description as well.

You should use a grading service where you are buying expensive rare coins.

Dealers use the same service to check if their stock is correctly priced (so that they cn still make
a profit without overcharging the customer).

Buyers can also use the same service to check on the authenticity of the coins
and to ensure they are paying the correct price for it.

Some dealers do sell reproduction or fake coins and this is a way to stop that happening to you.

Some of the factors to take into consideration are the age, condition and wear of the coin plus any toning or colouratio.

Companies I recommend are :
PCGS,ANACS,NGC and PCI but ask a major coin dealer and they will recommend a service for you.
However I know that there are other reputable coin grading services.

Some grading services use several experts to grade each coin and some smaller companies only use one expert.

You should of course get a guarantee when you use a coin grading service
Here is the link to PCGS:
U.S. Gold Type Coins - Regular Strikes

If you do not know the service personally then it is wise to check up other peoples experience
with a coin grading service.

Before you buy another Coin
Apr.30, 2009 in Ancient Coins, Coin Identification, Fake Coins, Gold Coins, scams

I really suggest you should check out a few of the links on my previous post.

I was not aware of a few of these fakes and I would like to try to help you avoid some of the fakes around at present.
Quite a few of the forgeries seem to come from the Far East so I would SERIOUSLY ask that you check out the Feedback for any vendor selling from China.
Notably the Panda Series are often copies.
I have noticed myself fakes of German Nazi Gold Coins (they are base metal gold plated recently) and Trade Dollars (there are more details on he link above)
As for Roman Coins - well I would check out any valuable ones carefully.
A good way to do this is to go onto eBay and do an Advanced Search looking for the same coin you are considering - if more than a couple show up with the same details and especially from the same vendor then it might be wise to look elsewhere.

Another of my websites is www.bestvintage mickey.com and the exact same situation arises with Fake Mickey Mouse rare collectors pins.
A few Chinese factories are really geared up specifically to copy and mass produce rare collectors pins to sell on auction sites.
I assume it is the same factories who have seen the posssiblities of mass producing Trade Dollars and other valuable coins.

American Buffalo Gold Coins

The American Buffalo 24 Karat Gold Coin.

An Excellent 24 Karat Gold Bullion Coin as a gold investment..

The American Buffalo is The First 24-Karat Gold Bullion Coin From The United States Mint .
In times of financial Stress many investors look for a solid and reliable investment that will retain its value. The American Buffalo Gold Coin is acceptable on all fronts.

The recent Financial crisis has proved the worth of this investment as many 1 ounce gold coins that just over a year ago were available for just $250 are now selling for nearly four times as much. These will of course eventually be collectors coins.

Proof American Buffalo Gold Coins are the thing to look for as a collectors item as these are a little outside the vagaries of the bullion prices.
