Australian Gold Coins

Australian Gold Coins have an interesting history dating back to the Ballarat Gold Rush,
Ballarat was the Australian equivalent of the Yukon Gold rush and tented camps sprang up around the town.

Just as in the American Gold Rushes, Hotels,Gambling Dens and other entertainments soon followed to part the Gold Miners from their gold dust.

There is now a re-enactment park at Ballarat where you can visit and try your hand at panning for gold.
For several years after the founding of New South Wales,Australia did not have its own currency and instead
Spanish Dollars and other currencies were used instead (sometimes even commodities like wheat).
When change was needed a piece of the coin was clipped off.

English Shillings, Dutch Guilders and even rupees were also used.
In 18212 Governor Macquaree bought Spanish Dollars .
To prevent people from exporting them, Holes were punched through
to keep them inAustralia. These became known as Holey Dollars (and the punched piece was known as the dump and used for change).

Trade Tokens were also in use and these were usually as pay for employees and could only be used in the company store.
Originally the Australians used British Gold Coins for trade.
After various discoveries of gold around Australia, the demand was so great that the British Mint opened new Mints in Sydney ,Melbourne and Perth to make new half soverign and Full Sovereign Coins. Each Mint has its own Mint Mark.
More recently Australia has brought out many lovely coins including the popular Gold Nugget $100 coin
