Atocha Treasure
Nuestra Señora de Atocha (The Atocha) was one of the ships that sank during a hurricane on to
coral reefs about 35 miles west of Key West.
This happened on September the 4th 1622.
Everyone except 3 sailors and two slaves were drowned.
the Atocha was bound for Spain after collecting cargo of Gold, silver, jewels and tobacco from the Spanish ports of
Cartagena,Porto Bello,Colombia, New Granada and Havana.
After sinking in 55 feet of water, the Spanish authorities managed to salvage half of the cargo from the other ship that sank at the same time - The Santa Margarita.
