The Quarter Eagle was one of the two first widely circulated American Gold Coins.(together with the $5 coins).
The Quarter Eagle had a face value of $2.50.

This was a major problem for President Andrew Jackson.
He wanted to strengthen the US Economy by retiring banknotes and replacing them with Gold.
This lead to a problem with a serious imbalance between the ratio between gold and silver.
This in turn led to people melting down gold coins,He changed the gold specie fineness down to .8992 fine and this together with the change of the gold/silver ratio to 16:1 ensured that these coins would stay in circulation.

The original 1834 dated Classic Head $2.5 Quarter Eagle gold coins come in two different varieties: the Small Head and the Booby Head.

The most desirable Quarter Eagle coins for collectors are almost uncirculated (AU) and Mint coins which may look rather like Proofs as they have proof-like or semi proof -like surfaces.
Coins that have not been cleaned usually show original patina, golden
or orange colors and a thick skin.
As a rule Quarter Eagles are relatively inexpensive considering their age and the fact that these are historical early American Gold coins.
